ANTA/Past Events/Santa Fe 99
Created 08/01/99
This year's ANTA match in Santa Fe drew overseas visitors from as far away as Canada, Holland, Germany and England. Attendees also included members from states as diverse as Connecticut, North Carolina, California, Michigan and Texas, to name but a few.
Our third event in New Mexico featured Bobby Fournier's open house on Thursday night, an informal match on Friday, after which attendees scattered to see the sights in and around Santa Fe, and a wonderful dinner that night at Quail Run. Although no formal ANTA events were scheduled for the weekend, many people ventured down to Albuquerque to attend the cluster of shows held at the New Mexico State Fairgrounds. Norfolk judge on Saturday was England's Elizabeth Cartledge whose calm, efficient judging style had also taken her through an entry of 123 Labrador Retrievers earlier in the day. Best in Show judge on Saturday was Bobby Fournier.
Once again, it was nice to have the opportunity to visit with Sally and Ron Willbie and Gilean White who have made the trip from England to Albuquerque so frequently they must have a bushel basket of frequent flyer miles, and with Germany's Frauke Hinsch who has been so generous in sharing her considerable knowledge with many fledgling Norfolk owners in this country and abroad.
As usual, we couldn't have held this event without considerable support from many volunteers, including Barbara Fournier, Jane Anderson (club store in tow), Louise Leone, Franzi Corman (our judge) and many others who pitched in to help when help was needed. We thank all of you for your participation.

| The following critique from judge Franzi Corman was written from her taped notes. Unfortunately, records identifying many of the class entries have been lost. We assume that exhibitors can figure out which dog was theirs ... and the rest of our readers will just have to guess! |
It was an honor and a pleasure to be asked to judge the ANTA match, my favorite Norfolk event, and to do so in Santa Fe, my favorite away-from-home place to be. Thanks to all the exhibitors who supported my first judging experience.
Puppy - 9-12 dog - Abbedale Son of a Buck (Ch. Hemlock Lane Domby Spend A Buck x Allright Wild West) Breeder/Owner: Joan Eckert. The only entry in his class, this was a dynamic young dog, nice masculine head, good level topline, short back. He was in good condition, had a nice Terrier attitude and most importantly, he moved nicely coming and going and from the side.
Puppy-4-6 bitch - This was a difficult class. My number one bitch #34, was definitely not enthused about being in the ring - and was rather reluctant about moving. However, when she did move, she moved beautifully - demonstrating significant reach and drive. Her front and rear assembly were sound and balanced - a nice wheaten coat - setting off her small dark eyes.
#6, my second choice, was a darling, typy little bitch, with great attitude and a winning expression. She did not move as smoothly today as the first place bitch, being somewhat less angulated front and rear.
Puppy-6-9 bitch - My first choice, #30, was a well-balanced bitch with a nice harsh coat and a great terrier attitude. She has a beautiful rear assembly, could have had a better front and topline, but nevertheless moved smoothly and well. She won over the second bitch primarily based on condition on this day.
#32 was very similar to my first choice in quality - a nice substantial bitch who shows promise.
My third choice, #36, was an adorable little grizzle pup who won my heart. She was full of herself with a marvelous expression.
Fourth choice was #16. I would have liked to see a better topline, but she has time to grow into herself.
Best Puppy in Show: Abbedale's Son of a Buck.
Housedog - Dog. An energetic dog with great terrier attitude and expression, #9 was obviously having a great time at the show.
Housedog - Bitch. First choice was #32. A beautiful little bitch, nice coat, nice movement, well-balanced. She looks right at home in the show ring. She has somewhat better shoulders and topline than my second choice.
Second, #36, is a cute black and tan with a nice attitude that was unfortunately out of coat today.
Third, a nice little bitch, #30, was hard to examine today. She apparently thought I was up to no good!
Open Bitch - This was a large and impressive class.
First, Domby's Rosa Dartle (Ch. Hemlock Lane Domby Spend A Buck x
Ch. Domby's Miss Clara Peggotty) Breeder: Tony Gabrielli, Wayne Palmer and
Joan Eckert. Owner: Tony Gabrielli and Wayne Palmer. An impressive bitch
with wonderful breed type. She caught my eye as she moved smoothly around
the ring.
Second, Buckeye Annabelle (Ch. Buckeye Bradley x Ch. Jaeva Dolly Blue) Breeder/Owner: Dick and Kay McKinstry. My choice for second had a somewhat finer head, with a lovely expression, nice front and topline, and a somewhat better rear assembly than my third choice.
Third, #7, had a gorgeous head and expression and a wonderful bite and a nice front.
Fourth, #20, was a nice compact bitch with a nice attitude.
Stakes Bitch - Ch. Regency's Jerusalem Rose (Ch. Max-Well's Will B Good x Ch. Regency's Angel of Abbedale. Breeder/Owner: Katrina and Michael Dennis. A beautiful bitch in excellent condition that showed beautifully. Nice head and appealing expression.
Best Adult in Show: Domby's Rosa Dartle.
I placed the Open bitch over the Stakes bitch primarily because she demonstrated superior movement and an excellent bite.
Best in Show: Abbedale's Son of a Buck.
It was a close call between these two half-siblings, but his balance, topline and movement coming and going won him the day.
