MIDWEST MATCH, JULY 15, 2000 - RUSSELL, OHIO
Norfolk Owners Gather for ANTA's Midwest Match
On a glorious sunny day in July, Norfolks and their owners came from
as far afield as Canada and Colorado and points between to participate in
the Midwest match hosted by Tony Gabrielli and Wayne Palmer in Russell,
Ohio.
There were approximately 60 dogs entered in the conformation classes
under Judge Sandra Wolfskill and stewarded by Donna Francis. Proud owners
paraded, persuaded and cajoled their dogs, many of which were puppies taking
their first tentative steps, round the show ring for various classes.
Best in Show went to Ch Abbedale's Son of a Buck. One of the many high
spots of the day was watching Jingle (a young blind Norfolk) and her owner
Andrew McCrary win their class. Jingle has adapted wonderfully and made
lots of new friends that day. Another was watching a photo session with
Chip, a 17 year-old veteran bitch (Ch Poole's Ide Beach Blanket Bingo) with
lots of her progeny and their owners (twenty I believe).

After lunch everyone was introduced to flat racing -- almost every Norfolk
was eager to get that tail first. Whilst the dogs took a breather, the raffle
and auction were held with many bidding for Norfolk related items. Then
onto lure coursing. Has anyone noticed how the Norfolk's sight and voice
improve once they've chased that lure? Whilst some were coursing, others
were learning about go-to-ground with lots of praise and encouragement for
the beginners.
The day was rounded off with a cookout for sixty people with lots of
good food and company in Tony and Wayne's garden.

Midwest Match Judge Comments on Entries
It was a pleasure to judge the ANTA midwest match. The venue was wonderful,
the number and quality of the entries fantastic, and the hospitality of
the club wonderful. A special thank you to everyone who brought their wonderful
Norfolks for my evaluation.
The Norfolk is not a big dog, but neither should he be toyish in head
and body. Substance, correct outline and head, along with sound movement
are important characteristics of this breed. Specimens with long legs, long
hocks, and weak rears are not good representatives of the breed, and were
not rewarded. My Best in Match dog was everything I look for in a Norfolk,
and a pleasure to find in his class.
- Puppy 2-4 Bitches
- 1. Flurries Bayside Beacon (Ch. Pinchbeck Sam x Flurries Ida
Lewis Rock). Peggy Metcalf. Red puppy with nice dark eye and correct stop.
Ears slightly long. Good movement coming and going; could carry topline
better from the side.
2. Glendale Celestial Seasoning (Ch. Glendale Mr Lincoln x Abbedale
Cover Girl). Linda Haring. Red puppy with beautiful head and outline. Correct
front assembly. Weak rear, lacking in drive, spoiled her movement.
3. Glendale Moon Sprite of Norwood (Ch. Glendale Mr Lincoln x Glendale
Garland). Sandra Augustine. Black & tan puppy with very typey head,
good ears and good ear set. Lacking in rear drive and movement.
4. Anderscroft Our Rose (Easy High Hopes x Pinchbeck Black Eyed
Susan). Jane Anderson. Red puppy with correct head proportions. Lacked
the soundness on the move of the first three in the class.

- Puppy 4-6 Dogs
- 1. Abbedale Diamond Jim (Ch. Shelly's Diamond Dealer x Abbedale
Calamity Jane). Joan Eckert. Red male with dark eyes, correct stop and
correct ear set. Correct front assembly contributed to his proper gait.
2. Domby's Bubba (Ch. Max-Well's Spring into Action x Ch. Domby's
Georgianna). Tony Gabrielli & Wayne Palmer. Red puppy with correct
head, nice outline. Lacked the movement of the first place dog.
3. Abbedale Prince Edward (not listed). Joan Eckert. A red puppy
with a very correct head, dark eyes, correct muzzle proportions. Proper
outline. On the day, would not move around the ring well.
4. Domby's Sushi (Ch. Abbedales Ruddle Ridge Penn x Ch. Domby's
Sissy Jupe). Tony Gabrielli & Wayne Palmer. Black & tan puppy,
longer in muzzle than what I prefer. Also did not want to move around the
ring on the day!
-
- Puppy 4-6 Bitches
- 1. Locklan Go Ahead Make My Day (Ch. Rightly So Sinful Reflection
x Southhampton Winnie the Pooh). Mary Jo & Tony Ray Sweany. Red puppy
with femine head and expression. Correct front assembly, well angulated
in the rear. Held her topline on the move. Best Junior Puppy
2. Dralion Contessa (not listed). Linda Dowdle. Red puppy, equal
in head to the first place puppy. Somewhat short in body.
3. Abbedales The Duke's Duchess ( Ch. The Duke of Copperplate x
Ch. Domby's Miss Clara Peggotty). Joan Eckert. Red puppy, narrow in head
and muzzle compared to the first two in the class. Front movement was acceptable;
rear movement was not her fortune.
4. Domby's Fanny Fisher (Ch. The Duke of Copperplate x Ch. Domby's
Miss Clara Peggotty). Tony Gabrielli & Wayne Palmer. Red puppy very
similar to the third place puppy. Lacked a willingness to show on the day.

angulation in rear compromised movement. Best Senior Puppy

- Adult Dogs
- 1. Domby's Oliver Twist (Ch. Abbedales Ruddle Ridge Penn x Ch.
Domby's Sissy Jupe). Peter & Linda Dowdle. Red dog, compact in body.
Correct head, correct proportions throughout. Level topline and used himself
well on the move. Best Adult
2. Toby (not listed). Joan Eckert. Red dog; not the head I prefer,
especially muzzle length. Topline was not as strong as the first place
dog.
3. Easy High Hopes (Int. Ch. Porrigito Claypot x Sw. Ch. Easy Click
Track). Jane Anderson. Red dog with a lovely head and adequate movement.
Lacking in show condition.
-
- Adult Bitches
- 1. Franaro Fancy Free (Ch. Pinchbeck Old Sweet Song x Ch. Pinchbeck
Primrose). Mary Jo & Tony Ray Sweany. Red bitch with a level topline.
Outline correct in height and length. Beautiful, correct side gait.
2. Abbedale Kaylins Chagrin (Ch. Abbedales Ruddle Ridge Penn x Ch.
Abbedales Starine). Peter & Linda Dowdle. Red bitch very similar in
type to the first place bitch, and pushed hard for the class. Eyes somewhat
rounder than what I prefer.
3. Flurries Chatham Light (Ch. Avalon's First Step x Flurries Matinicus
Light). Peggy Metcalf. Red bitch with a pleasing head. Topline was not
her fortune, which spoiled her outline both standing and on the move.
4. Buckeye Irish Lace (Ch. Buckeye Bentley x Ch. Jaeva Dolly Blue).
Sandra Augustine. A red, very similar to the third place bitch. Nice head,
but correct topline and outline were lacking.
-
- Stakes Dogs
- 1. Ch. Abbedale's Son of a Buck (Ch. Hemlock Lane Domby Spend
a Buck x Allright Wild West). Breeder/Owner Joan Eckert. A lovely red dog,
very masculine, but not coarse. Correct muzzle length, dark eyes. Correct
length of neck and good front assembly. Correct outline, balance and proportions.
Level topline, which he held firm on the move. Excellent side gait. Exactly
what I was looking for in a Norfolk. Best in Stakes and Best in Match
2. Abbedale's Buckaroo (Ch. Hemlock Lane Domby Spend a Buck x Ch.
Abbedale's Starina). Joan Eckert & Jeff Roberts. Red male, more square
in body. Good length of neck.
3. Flurries Cross Rip Light (Ch. Avalon's First Step x Flurries
Matinicus Light). Lori Pelletier & Peggy Metcalf. Red male similar
in outline to the first place dog. Topline was not his fortune, spoiling
the outline both standing and on the move.
4. Gambit's First Knight at Avalon (Ch. Avalon's First Step x Ch.
Sandpiper's Cecily Parsley). Nancy Herrick. Red male, more of a square
outline. Did not balance; topline not level.

Stakes Bitches
- 1. Weesie (not listed). Joan Eckert. Red bitch with correct
head, dark almond shaped eyes. Very feminine without being toyish. Balanced
front and rear. Best of Opposite in Stakes
2. Ch. Jaeva Brandysnap (Crivnor Run Do x Spitewinter Wren). Linda
Federici. Red bitch similar to the first place, but topline not as level
or strong.
3. Can Ch. Cortaillod Storm Warning (Ch. Surrey Down Easter x Cortaillod
Rasberry at Islay). Victor Sattler & Corinne Folger. Red bitch, cobbier
than the first two in the class. Level bite.
4. Ch. Sandpiper's Calypso (Ch. Nanfan Cat Burglar x Ch. Ginger
& Pickles O' Sandpiper). Judith Felton. Red bitch with round eyes.
Not the type I prefer.
Household Pet Classes
- All the household pet entries were true winners, demonstrating the
best of the Norfolk character. Both the first place dog (Cortaillod
Gooseberry of Islay) and the first place bitch (Domby's Jingle of
Pickwick) earned their first places because of their grooming, condition,
short nails and clean teeth! The bitch was Best Household Pet.

Attention Earthdogs: "Get That Rat!"
"True Terriers" is what Norfolks are all about, and that is
what we had at the July event in Ohio. The day was about lots of love and
lots of tenacious terriers ready for their natural instincts to take over
and show people the true meaning of the word focus.
Norfolks are true athletes and should not be taken lightly. Just about
every dog that came to explore the above ground tunnel showed some interest
in the rat. It was fun watching the dogs figure out what was at the other
end of the tunnel.
We want to thank everyone -- especially my assistant Peggy Metcalf --
for being such great guardians of the breed and for allowing the dogs to
utilize their natural working instincts.
