In the days since our Spring Fling in Martinsburg, WV, there has been an outpouring of messages, praising the event and saying what fun it was. Typical was the comment by Paula and David Miller that their ". . . 10-month old Frodo had more fun Saturday than he has ever had before in his short little life. . ."
Indeed, Carolyn and Wally Bishop are to be congratulated for an outstanding event. While the weather gods toyed with us on Friday with rain, hail and the threat of tornadoes, especially for those arriving from the north, the sky was clear Saturday and the day couldn't have been more delightful for our match. The Bishop's Finale Farm features a large training room that has proven ideal for conformation matches, the ANTA store, agility and lunch. Additionally, we had separate areas and fields for intro to earthdog, treasure hunt, junior earthdog, and flat racing & lure coursing.
I want to thank all who helped (and hope that I don't miss anyone): Linda Plummer and Richard Reynolds for judging conformation and junior earthdog, respectively; Vallie Beckwith, Sheila Foran, Debby Pritchard, and Cheryl Reynolds for registration, stewarding, and the ANTA store; Peggy Metcalf and Donna O'Hara for intro to earthdog; and Dave Barry, Amy Harney & her friend Mike, and Matthew Pritchard for flat racing and lure coursing. Special recognition goes to Cheryl and Richard Reynolds who came down early Friday and with Wally Bishop's help laid out the treasure hunt's 170 scented "mice" and dug up and reset the junior earth; and came back Sunday morning to complete the treasure hunt tear down. Also, to Carolyn's friend Judy Lucas who provided invaluable photographic and general assistance. And, last but not least, to Virginia Fairbanks for supplying scent and quarry.
While it can truly be said that a good time was had by all, perhaps the dog who had the most fun was Marjorie Lewis' Red Mettle Sweet Bea. This venerable 12 year old not only had a flat race heat all to herself (just to show off) she was the ONLY qualifier in the day's earth-dog activity. Congratulations are certainly in order!

| Pictured above with his trophies is Chidley John Rigby, judged Best All Around dog at this year's Spring Fling. Rigby won his conformation class and was judged Best Adult; found the most "mice" on the treasure hunt and was a contender in the flat racing. Congratulations to his owners, the proud Tutolo's! |
Puppy 2-4 Dog -- Chestnut Hills Angus (Ch. Yarrow's Big Ben x Chestnut Hills Robin) Breeder/Owner: Karen Anderson. The winner of this class is an outgoing, well balanced black and tan baby who defied his age by moving strongly and freely at the end of his owner's lead. He won his class on overall balance and movement. The number two red puppy was adorable, but not as balanced and muscled as his competition.
Puppy 2-4 Bitch - Final Lea Honey Bee (Ch. Churchwood's Max-a-Million x Final Lea Ticket to Ride) Breeder/Owner: Jayne Dubin. First and second in this class looked like twins when they walked in the ring. Two very plush puppies who were very well leash trained already, easily outdoing their competition in ring manners. First excelled in neck and shoulders and rear movement.
Puppy 4-6 Dog - Flurries Ausable Point Light (Ch. Zebedee Jacob's Ladder x Flurries Malonious Light) Breeder: Peggy Metcalf. Owner: Kerry M. Hurst. Only one in his class, this appealing puppy with his just-washed shiny black and red coat is indeed pleasing to the eye. Superb rear angulation and overall movement served him well later when he won the Junior Racing competition!
Puppy 4-6 Bitch - Artisan's Granary Slip (Ch. Zebedee Jacob's Ladder x Artisan's Sienna Bristle) Breeder/Owner: Donna O'Hara. First in this class is a beautifully balanced, well trained puppy in top notch condition. Small dark eyes and small, neatly placed ears gave this puppy a true terrier expression. Her avid attention to owner was appealing indeed. Second was very similar to her black and tan litter brother in the previous class, beautiful mover, but not as balanced as number one. Third was a darling puppy whose ears had not settled and lacked the substance of 1 and 2.
Puppy 6-9 Bitch - Redford's Allience with Avalon (Ch. Nanfan Culver x Ch. Dakota's Fiddle Dee) Breeder: Joan Rawlins & Sal Garofalo. Owner: Lori Pelletier. Winner of this class is a lovely, well balanced bitch in her underclothes which accentuated her rock solid topline. Second was in full blown coat, but what a gorgeous color! Very appealing sweet temperament; moved well on the second go-round. Third excelled in head and expression, but not as balanced as 1 and 2.
Puppy 9-12 Dog - Seneca Valley Johnny Cash (Ch. Chidley Mr. McGregor x Seneca Valley Rubber Duck) Breeder/Owner: Ann Erricker. Only one in his class today, this handsome, harsh coated black and tan puppy is a well balanced, very masculine dog with lots of substance.
Puppy 9-12 Bitch - Sandpiper's Calypso (Ch. Nanfan Cat Burglar x Ch. Ginger & Pickles O'Sandpiper) Breeder: Vallie Beckwith. Owner: Judith Felton. Winner is a short backed bitch with short, hard coat and appealing head and expression. In beautiful condition she was well trained and free moving.
Best Puppy was the bitch puppy winner from the 4-6 month class, Artisan's Granary Slip. All my winners could have won Best Puppy another day, but in my opinion this little girl asked to be picked from across the ring, presenting a beautiful outline and exhibiting true Norfolk type.
[Note: I just noticed all my dog puppy winners were black and tan, and my bitch puppy winners were red...hmmmm.]
Adult Dog - Chidley John Rigby (Ch. Chidley Mr. McGregor x Ch. Chidley Blue Moon) Breeder: Barbara Ege. Owner: Barbara Tutolo. My winner is a big red masculine dog in beautiful full coat, tidied up to perfection. Pleasing expression, free-moving and steady temperament. Second too is a big red dog with beautiful mahogany coat, but still looked the rangy puppy and needs to mature.
Adult Bitch - Hevan's Cafe Latte (Ch. Allright Mackenzie x Catastrofe's Chokocoffee) Breeder/Owner: Heidi Evans. My favorite of all the dogs I judged today, the winner of this large class is a small, wiry, harsh coated bitch. Left untidy, she was hard to see at first and not until I got her on the table did I begin to see her strengths. Well muscled, in very fit condition, she refused to stand facing left to right on the table because she was so riveted to something she saw out the windows! She stood transfixed on the table facing the wrong way. Not a bit interested in her surroundings, she nevertheless glided across the ring under the direction of her owner, especially when moving toward those windows! Very well balanced, correct size, certainly not over 12 pounds, beautiful harsh coat, small ears and keen working terrier expression. Second was an appealing bitch in short hard coat beautifully presented; pretty head and expression, but not as balanced as number 1, and still looks like a puppy that needs to mature. Third is a pretty, feminine bitch in good condition, but had one fly-away ear today. Fourth has a stunning head and expression, but was in her underclothes today with raggedy leg furnishings.
Best Adult - Hevan's Cafe Latte is the bitch for reasons stated above.
Stakes Class - Ch. Avalon's First Step (Ch. Greenfield's Step to the Rear x Ch. Yarrow's First Lady) Breeder/Owner: Lori Pelletier My Stakes Class winner looked the true champion today. A real show dog with beautiful ring manners, fluid mover with eager expression, well muscled in very fit condition.
Best in Match is the bitch puppy, Artisan's Granary Slip, who won on overall appearance, the whole dog ... the total picture she presented as I looked across the ring. And such a pretty picture she was to my eyes that day!
