ANTA FALL FESTIVAL
OCTOBER 16-17, 1999 - KATONAH, NY

She Came. She Saw. She Conquered. Then ... She Did It Again.

Last year, Brenda Coleman's beautiful red bitch Strathcona's Viva La Rouge was named Best in Show at ANTA's Fall Festival. So, this year Brenda brought her litter sister Strathcona's Trifle and duplicated the feat.

Judge Jack Simm's practiced eye selected winners from the puppy classes on up that were sound, well-balanced representatives of the breed. With nearly sixty dogs to choose from, the judge kept the classes moving along at a brisk pace, all the while allowing each exhibit every chance to strut his or her stuff.

The Best in Show bitch came from the Merry of Beaufin Bitch Stakes class. For the second year in a row, Mary Fine's Ch. Tylwyth Just Riley, CDX, took top honors in the Biffin of Beaufin Dog Stakes. Best Adult in Show, Redford's Alliance at Avalon was a bitch owned by Lori Pelletier, Joan Rawlins and Sal Garofalo. Best Puppy was Carol Falk's 6-9 month puppy dog, Ben Kelev's Poker Chip.

Following the day's judging, Dr. Katherine Evans delivered this year's Joan R. Read Memorial Lecture. Dr. Evan's spoke of the use of acupuncture in veterinary medicine, and she also addressed other topics including vaccine alternatives for pets, favorite herbs and supplements, and the basic differences in the quality of available pet foods. Her Labrador Retriever demo dog went to sleep in the middle of Dr. Evan's presentation, but the rest of the audience was attentive and involved.

Sunday's events included the always popular lure coursing and flat racing, along with the re-introduction of AKC Canine Good Citizenship testing. Especially rewarding was the reaction of novice dogs being introduced to earth work for the first time. Robert Lachman, ably assisted by Peggy Metcalf, spent hours patiently introducing Norfolks to the joys of "getting that rat!" and some future earthdogs undoubtedly got their start on this beautiful fall weekend. Lori Pelletier's Charlie once again proved his prowess as an adult flat racer, and the long-tail puppy entry of Sally French and Holger Nissen, Todmorden First Home Run, proved fleetest of foot in the puppy races, as well as demonstrating real interest in rodents.

Special thanks go to all who helped make this event the success it was. We are especially grateful to Victor Sattler who quickly stepped in to run the lure coursing when ANTA's equipment took a scenic detour in the back of Barbara Runquist's car.

Thanks, also, to all exhibitors. We'll see you next year.

Message from the Vice President

ANTA Fall Festival Continues Tradition of Successful Events

I can still hear barking (shrieking), applause and voices from all the attendees of this year's Fall Festival. Unlike the weekend before (Montgomery County Kennel Club the latest in mud baths), this event dawned with a fine fall weekend. We all need to express our thanks to the event organizers, Sheila Foran, Henrietta and Robert Lachman, and Elizabeth Baker for the excellent job they did in organizing and producing the event. Also, all the other volunteers including Jane Anderson, Peggy Metcalf, Victor Sattler, and Cathy Heimbach who pitched in and played significant roles in making the weekend a success.

I chaired a brief Annual Meeting as Ed Plummer was unable to attend due to an inopportune foot injury (since healed) the end of September. Significant business included the announcements: That a Nominating Committee will have to be appointed in the coming months as several positions on the board will become available. All members need to think of people who would be good candidates to serve on the Nominating Committee, as well as potential officers and board members. And that ANTA will publish a Pedigree Book update with planned availability at the 2000 Fall Festival. Pedigree Submission forms, which were available at the event, are included in this mailing.

The seminar on veterinary acupuncture, herbs, supplements and vaccine issues by Katherine Evans was well received.

I would like to extend a special thanks to Priscilla Twombly for providing the beautiful Mums that graced the ring, to Robert Lachman for making the Norfolk placement markers and to Victor Sattler for standing in for Ed Plummer in setting up and running the lure coursing. I had picked up the ANTA equipment from Ed and had transported it to New York. However, I got confused getting to the site on Sunday and took an unplanned (hour and half) tour of the scenic roads in Westchester County. I can assure you that the trees were in beautiful color, the roads are winding, and there were geese in some pastures. All in all, a nice scenic tour if I had not felt pressed for time.

I hope everyone agrees with me it was a wonderful event and we're looking forward to attending again in years to come.
