Past Events/Katonah '97
Revised 12/13/99
First of all, I want to thank the exhibitors for the high level of good sportsmanship and courtesy displayed. To those who fared less well than they felt they should have, please remember that this was the opinion of one person, on one day.
I want to thank the exhibitors for presenting their dogs as the breed should appear; that is, without excessive trimming and, dare I say it, without cosmetic assistance which seems to be the bane of the breed at the moment.
Exhibitors will have noticed that there were certain criteria which I permitted to influence my selections. I feel that good shoulder lay-back is important and often used this as the deciding quality. As I mentioned at the dinner, a poor top line is the kiss of death in this breed and I felt I had to penalize those I did see. Mouths were good and I do not recall seeing any that offended me.
Secondly, I wanted this to be a very positive experience for those dogs at the start of their show careers. Premature sparring can be somewhat disconcerting for young Norfolk especially with an inexperienced handler.
My most difficult choice was between the two fine young gentlemen who submitted themselves to the ordeal of Junior Showmanship: George Harrington and William Cunndill. Here were two young men with a feel for the breed and as neither deserved to lose, I felt obliged to share the spoils between them. to sum up, the quality of the Norfolk was excellent and some good dogs finished out of the ribbons. I thank you for the most satisfying experience in dogs and I remain deeply grateful for the opportunity. I thank you.
