ANTA/Past Events/Katonah02
Revised 02/23/03
Never let it be said that Norfolk Terrier owners (or their dogs!) are wimps. Undaunted by the weather, ANTA friends arrived early on a rainy Saturday greeted with hot coffee and doughnuts for our annual Fall weekend at the John Jay Homestead in Katonah, New York. Some of these friends came many miles, especially the contingent from Canada, and our venerable judge, Joan Eckert. She traveled a rather circuitous route from Michigan, had her luggage lost, but went on to do a superior job of judging an entry of approximately 60 dogs.
The puppies were first and included some really nice entries this year. Jayne Dubin's "Big" was named Best Puppy in Match, with the Best of Opposite Sex award going to Lori Pelletier's Avalon's Case Closed.
When it came to Junior Handlers, there was a terrific entry of five, all of whom did a super job. Celine Joiris took the honors with her dog Stamp, who went on to win Best of Opposite in the Adult class. Best Adult was a lovely bitch, Rugby's Sam's Breyden, bred and owned by Linda Federici.
Ch. Maxwell's Starburst was the winner of the Merry of Biffin Bitch Stakes class, with Ch. Gambit's First Knight at Avalon taking the Biffin of Beaufin Dog Stake. "Rooke" as he is called, went on to win Best in Match with his owner Lori Pelletier at the "helm".
While everyone enjoyed a marvelous picnic lunch, Victor Sattler changed hats and became our auctioneer. Among the special items sold were several books and two lovely-framed pictures from the estate of Doris McGee, a former president of the Norwich and Norfolk Terrier Club.
Throughout the day Jane Anderson's notions table lured old and new customers to view and purchase items from her marvelous collection of Norfolk memorabilia, many from the UK and Europe. Kudos to Jane for all the transporting back and forth of these grand items.
After a short meeting, we had a special presentation by veterinarian Kim Nelson and canine science teacher Lori Pelletier. They both stressed the importance of knowing what to do in emergency situations with our dogs.
Flat racing and lure coursing thoroughly entertained all of our dogs on Sunday. Robert Lachman once again volunteered his car battery to help send the lure around the course with dogs in hot pursuit. Our earthdog practice was somewhat curtailed due to the weather, but Peggy Metcalf set up some of the wooden liners and introduced a live rat to many eager puppies.
As always, this was a special weekend with our friends and their dogs. Plan on joining us next year!
