ANTA FALL FESTIVAL
KATONAH, OCTOBER 13-14, 2001

This year's Fall Festival had special significance, coming just a month after the tragic events of September 11. Although the entire country was deeply affected, those living in the greater New York metropolitan area, including our hosts at the historic John Jay Homestead, were directly impacted in many ways. To everyone's delight, ANTA's weekend dawned with particularly spectacular weather, the crowd was large and congenial, our tent was decorated with a large American flag, and Judge Andrew Kramer's rapport with handlers and their dogs made for a special Saturday. With a large fund-raising dance rescheduled to the same weekend, the Homestead's "farm field" morphed from show ground, to parking lot, to sporting venue with nary a hitch.
There was a nice selection of puppies to choose from this year, with a strong Canadian contingent copping the honors for Best Puppy in Show and Best Opposite Sex Puppy in Show. Best in Show, Ch. Ben Kelev's Good Time Charlie, came out of the strong Biffin of Beaufin dog stakes class.

We only had two Junior Handlers this year, but both Celine Joiris from New York and Lauren Laventure from Canada showed the adults a thing or two about handling. Both young ladies show promise for great success in the show ring.

Sunday dawned somewhat gray and cloudy, but thanks to Peggy Metcalf a number of young dogs were introduced to earthwork, while Cathy Heimbach and Lorraine Comi organized the flat racing, and Robert Lachman offered the ever-popular lure coursing. A special treat was the appearance by Norfolk owner Page Dickey who signed copies of her wonderful new book, Dogs In Their Gardens which features a number of Norfolk Terriers.

JUDGE'S CRITIQUE
ANDREW KRAMER, PH. D.

I saw a variety of types of Norfolk, which is a good sign. Last year when I judged Sweeps at Montgomery, many of the entries looked alike. The majority of entries at the Fall Festival had good bites, nice width of skull and well-pronounced stops. There were only one or two dogs that had a light eye. Ear placements were good. About a third of the entries had upright shoulders, and half of the entries could use more width of chest. The latter was not of too much concern due to the young age of the dogs. Toplines for the most part were good. Rear movement varied and fronts generally needed improvement.

It was very close between Birkenshaw Windchaser and Jaeva Dancing Lesson for Best Puppy. The former had a nice arch of neck, strong drive, and excellent movement. He had a good brisket but his front swung a little bit when I viewed the dog coming towards me. Jaeva Dancing Lesson had the best rear of any entry, with well let down hocks. Her coat was in very good condition. She had a nice head despite her ears dropping a little bit below the eyeline. Unfortunately the bitch puppy did not behave well for her owner, pulling to the side on the come back, making it difficult to assess her front movement. In the end I went with the dog for the Best Puppy based on overall showmanship. However both top contenders should do exceedingly well in the show ring.

Black Magic's White Sands at Avalon was the Merry of Beaufin Stakes winner. This youngster was a cobby bitch in good coat. Her relative proportions were excellent although I wish there were a bit more of her. She had a lovely head, nice rear, and fairly good front. On occasion she tended to drop her tail but she sparkled when she was on the move.

Ch. Ben Kelev's Good Time Charlie ("Charlie") was the Biffin of Beaufin Stakes winner. It was close between him, Ch. Gambit's First Knight at Avalon ("Rook") and Ch. Domby's Oliver Twist II ("Oliver"). Charlie had a beautiful outline, moved well, and was in excellent condition. His coat was clearly the best of the three contenders. Rook had a beautiful rear, pretty head, and excellent topline. He tended to throw his ears, which detracted enough from his expression, that I placed him second. Oliver was an overall nice dog. He had one of the best heads of any of the entries, was built solidly with ample brisket and spring of rib. He seemed to be bothered by a bitch in season as he showed somewhat dully; otherwise I might have placed him first.

My choice for Best in Match was between the Best Puppy and the Biffin of Beaufin Winner. As both dogs were quality Norfolk, I went with the one who showed best during the final judging, which was Ch. Ben Kelev's Good Time Charlie.
