KATONAH, OCTOBER 14-15, 2000
FALL FESTIVAL AGAIN PROVES HIGHLIGHT OF ANTA'S SEASON

Once again, ANTA was blessed with fine weather and lots of good company at the John Jay Homestead in Katonah, NY, site of the annual Fall Festival. Judge Lydia Hutchinson, ably assisted by newly appointed "steward for life" Jim Zabawa, made her way through a strong entry of puppies and adults in an efficient and supportive fashion.

The judge's choice for Best Puppy in Show was Peggy Metcalf's Flurries Chatham Light (Ch. Avalon's First Step x Flurries Matinicus Light), who came from the Puppy Bitch 12-18 Month class. This sassy red charmer was pressed for "best" honors by Deborah Pritchard's Glenelg Gamekeeper (Ch. Wonderwood Winning Hand x Ch. Glenelg Grazie, SE, CGC), a puppy dog from the 2-4 Month class who showed up a storm despite his young age. Both of these exhibits were bred by their owners.

Best Adult went to the Veteran Bitch Ch. Chidley Cee Cee (Ch. Nanfan Caper x Ch. Chidley Charm), bred by the late Joan R. Read and owned by Alexandra A. Ijams. Best Opposite Adult went to the Veteran Dog Ch. Aberschan Coriander (Ch. Paprika of Whitehall x Aberschan Mimi), who was bred and is owned by Jim Covey and Jim Zabawa.

The Merry of Beaufin Stakes winner was Ch. Rhapsodale Stormy Weather (Ch. Max-Well's Weatherman x Ch. Bliss Creek Sassafras), who was bred by her owners, Susan W. and Jack P. DeWitt. Winner of the Biffin of Beaufin Dog Stake and this year's Best in Show winner was the attractive red dog, Ch. Aberschan Gilbert And (Ch. Surrey Red October x Aberschan Mimi). Bred by James S. Covey and James P. Zabawa, Gilbert is owned by Albert Labouchere and Jim Covey.

Saturday evening, Dr. Jerold S. Bell, Clinical Assistant Professor and Director of the Clinical Veterinary Genetics course at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine, spoke on the importance of understanding the genetic background of our breeding stock if we are to produce quality dogs that are free of serious health problems. In Dr. Bell's down-to-earth presentation, he stressed the importance of knowing your dog's genetic history and using that knowledge to breed away from debilitating health problems. In most every case, he said, it is better to work with a known quantity rather than to throw out an entire breeding program in order to start again from scratch.

Sunday's activities back at the John Jay Homestead included lure coursing, ably run by David Miller, introduction to earthdog work, supervised by Robert Lachman and Peggy Metcalf, and a variety of other activities that had Norfolks and their owners busy for most of the day.

Thanks to all who contributed their time and energy to make this another successful ANTA weekend.

Nineteen owners and handlers lined up with champions and titleholders for a group photograph at this year's Fall Festival. Titles represented included breed championships, obedience and earthdog titles and canine good citizenship.
