Revised 02/23/04
ANTA is pleased to announce that Australia's Liz Hindley will be judging this year's Fall Festival to be held October 11th and 12th.
In Liz's own words, "In 1982 my first Norfolk Terrier arrived from a breeder who thought I just could not live without one. For the previous ten plus years, I had been successfully showing West Highland White Terriers, and I was not sure why I should change. But, after much nagging, Gypsy arrived. She was not pick of the litter! She had `helicopter' ears and a rear that left a lot to be desired, but she wormed her way into our hearts and was there for the duration."
After a few years, I decided to mate her. She proved that Norfolks whelped ten times better than Westies, so I was hooked. Her progeny were successful in the ring, winning Group and Best in Show awards."
Over time, in an effort to further improve her line, Liz imported Nanfan Cactus. He helped to revamp the gene pool and Liz's breeding plans moved forward again. Subsequently, Nanfan Chill Off arrived and further progress was made.
"When Catastrophe Cannonball arrived in Western Australia from Finland, we were able to breed to him even though he was on the other side of the country. Now Nanfan Calamus has arrived and once again our quality has taken another leap in the right direction. To date he has won Runner up in Show (Group 2 in Show) three times and Best in Show once in his short career and his progeny are also being recognized with Group and Best in Show awards. I have been fortunate in having support from the other side of the world and have come to love this breed of `little red dogs'."
Liz has also gained her steward's license and her open judge's license for Terriers. She says, "Norfolks are part of my life and I do not think I will ever be without them now. I look forward to meeting everyone in October and having the chance to judge their dogs."

The luck of the draw was with ANTA as a robust entry along with an impressive number of members, friends and fans of Norfolks gathered at "the meadow", a beautiful part of the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation in Cross River, NY on October 11th and 12th.
The occasion was ANTA's Annual Fall Festival and glorious weather on Saturday, and "sporting weather" on Sunday, helped make the weekend a resounding success.
Spirits were high as the match got underway, with Australian judge Liz Hindley ready to make some difficult choices from the entry of 51 puppies and adults. Avalon's Case Closed (Ch. Mercator Point to Point x Ch. Avalon's Country Chase), better known as CC, was shown to Best Puppy in Match by her breeder/owner Lori Pelletier.
Ben Kelev's Ride the Wind (Ch. Ben Kelev's Good Time Charlie x Ben Kelev's Tiger Lily) was Best Opposite Sex puppy. He was bred by Carol Falk and is owned by Carol and Betsy Bliss. CC came from the 12-18 month bitch class, while her opposite number came from the 6-9 month dog class.
Among the adult winners were Best Adult Dog and Best Adult in Match Ch. Ben Kelev's Good Time Charlie, owned by Lori Pelletier, who came from the Veteran Dog class, and Best Adult Bitch Flurrie's Bayside Beacon, owned by Peggy Metcalf, who came out of the Adult Bitch class.
The hotly contested Biffin of Beaufin dog stake was won by breeder/owner Lori Pelletier's Ch. Avalon's First Step (Ch. Greenfield's Step to the Rear x Ch. Yarrow's First Lady). The equally competitive Merry of Beaufin Bitch Stake was won by Mary Ellen Wigmore's Ch. Quinsea's Honey of Ben Kelev (Ch. Nanfan Canter x Ch. Ben Kelev's Downpour). Honey was bred by Carol Falk. Best in Match went to the Zack, the dog stake winner.
A big "thank you" to Liz Hindley and Michael Bungey who traveled from Australia to join us for Montgomery festivities and to judge ANTA's match. Liz is a Norfolk breeder who currently has three litters back at home "down under".
The always-loyal Canadian contingent included Sally Harrington, daughter Clare, friend (and handler in training) Cecelia Grey, several adult Norfolks and three adorable eight-week-old puppies. Our venerable auctioneer/photographer Victor Sattler also made the trip from Ontario. In his role as auctioneer, Victor presented a first-edition copy of Joan Read's The Norfolk Terrier, several bottles of Wildgoose Vineyard's wine (bottled by the auctioneer), and a beautiful hand- carved plant stand/puppy toy box.
Jane Anderson's Norfolk notions had some terrific new items, many from England. As usual, the selection was extensive and many purchases were made.
After a brief general meeting, we convened at the Holiday Inn where Carol Falk spoke about two health conditions found in Norfolks: Icthyosis and Mitral Valve Disease. (For further information on both topics please see the Articles Index.).
On Sunday, the weather was not as kind to us as the day before, but we still had lots of racing events and earthdog training. Even the youngest Norfolks were enthusiastic participants.
One of the highlights of the weekend was a new activity called "Ratting for Ratings" a sort of rat maze in the woods where rats in ventilated tubes were placed in various places for the dogs to scent out. This proved to be a real challenge, and great fun, for dogs and handlers alike.
ANTA's Fall Festival weekend is always high on my priority list, what with the great camaraderie, all kinds of learning experiences, and just plain fun. Thanks to all who annually bring us together for this great event.
