ANTA SPRING FLING
APRIL 11, 1998
CASANOVA, VIRGINIA

MEG LOCKWOOD SWEEPS SPRING FLING!

Rain, Rain, go away ... oops! That was last year. This year, in spite of El Niño, the sun gods smiled and the weather was beautiful for ANTA's Spring Fling at the Weston Wildlife Area in Casanova, VA. The setting consists of several cleared acres in the woods, a care-taker's home and some deteriorating, historic buildings. But the real character comes from Casanova Hunt's fox hound kennels and permanent flat race and earthdog facilities.

Thanks in equal parts to Carolyn Bishop's two fifty-cup coffee pots and a portable generator, we were able to stoke Richard Reynolds so that he began his Introduction-To-Earthdog presentation shortly after 9 AM. Following the talk session, the class went over to the earth, where the dogs were introduced to the scent of the quarry. Some thirty dogs were entered for the training, and practice continued throughout the day.

Handler Richard W. Powell came from Pennsylvania to judge conformation and found his Best Puppy and Best In Match in Meg Lockwood's homebred 7½-month puppy bitch Locklan's And Tigger Too by Ch. Nanfan Culver x Ch. Southhampton Winnie the Pooh.

Heidi Evans had a big day with her homebred Hevans Titantic Jack by Ch. Nanfan Culver x Catastrofe's Chokocoffee going Best Puppy of Opposite Sex while her homebred Hevans Cafe Latte by Ch. Allright Mackenzie x Catastrofe Chokocoffee garnered Best Adult Bitch.

Best In Stakes Dog went to Richard & Cheryl Reynolds' Chidley Major G by Ch. Chidley Mr. McGregor x Ch. Chidley Blue Moon while Best In Stakes Bitch was earned by Barbara & Phil Ferro's Chidley Heaven Sent by Ch. Chidley Magic Bow x Ch. Chidley Blue Heaven. Best Housedog was won by Ann Robinson's dog Maxwell's Sizzle by Ch. Jaeva Matti Brown x Ch. Skyline's Maxwell Sundae.

After lunch Carl Schrader took charge of flat racing where Meg Lockwood's bitch Ch. Southhampton Winnie the Pooh by Ch. Davi of High Ridge Farms x Ch. Rightly So J. Ginger led the pack to win Best Flat Racer. Meanwhile, Colleen & Bob DeFraites' dog Domby's Benny Cost a Buck by Hemlock Lane Domby Spend a Buck x Domby's Miss Jenny Wren was Best Puppy Flat Racer.

In addition, Barb & Phil Ferro setup some agility equipment for an instroduction to this activity. Finally, the day wound up with an hour devoted to lure coursing run by David Berry.
